How do I get to Canberra?
Bizarrely, this is the only major world capital to only have a domestic airport. Travellers from South Africa will need to fly to Perth or Sydney and then get an internal flight to the capital from one of many carriers. Pialligo Avenue skirts the airport then joins the parallel arms of route 3 into the centre. It’s only around a ten minute drive.

Getting Around Canberra
The city was planned from scratch so driving around it is easy. It does get confusing though when you hit semi-rural areas and think you’ve left the city, only to find you enter another urban neighbourhood soon after.

Getting out of Canberra
The capital is a little in the middle of nowhere but within a few hours’ drive you’ll find Melbourne and Sydney and on the way pass through the ski resorts of the Blue Mountains. There are also a few interesting old villages and towns dotted around the capital.

Staying in Canberra
We like the very posh Rydges Lakeside whose price matches its luxury at R2400 a night. Still quite smart but a fraction of the price is the Best Western Tall Trees at R1500 a night.
 
What Must I see in Canberra?

• The Australian War Memorial. This is an emotional visit for all, not just Australians. As well as the memorial itself, there’s a fabulous museum dedicated to those who have fought in conflicts around the world.
• The National Museum. This is dedicated to the history of the country but confusingly set out in themes rather than chronologically. It’s still an interesting visit with many experiential exhibits.
• Kangaroos. What better place for the national animal than in the capital. Hundreds of them congregate around the lakes so take a walk with your camera.
• Black Mountain Tower. There are many places to get a panoramic view of the capital but none better than this communications tower. At nearly 200m tall, you’ll see just about everything going on.
