Brisbane Mini Guide

How do I get to Brisbane?
You won’t find any direct flights to the city from South Africa but by flying into Sydney, you can get a connecting flight up to the Queensland capital. This can give you the chance to spend a day or so in Sydney before heading to the very different city of Brisbane. The airport is to the northeast of the city and you can access it via the M1 and M7 motorways.

Getting Around Brisbane
The M1, M2 and M5 motorways form a triangle around the city making it very quick to get from one part to another. The city straddles the Brisbane River and it makes a good point of reference when you’re travelling around.

Getting out of Brisbane
The Glasshouse Mountains are inland of the city and a great place to spend a day. It’s a national park and there are many marked trails as well as small villages to explore. The Sunshine Coast is around ninety miles north of the city and where you’ll find picture perfect beaches as well as great surf.

Where to Stay in Brisbane
From as little as R1100 you can make use of the serviced apartments in the city. The most popular ones are the Meriton which you’ll find in different locations across Brisbane. For more luxury, try the Royal on the Park at R1600 a night.

What Must I see in Brisbane?
  • The Gabba. Cricket fans must visit this icon of the sport; the Brisbane Cricket Ground, the scene of many hard-fought Ashes tests.
  • XXXX Ale House. An icon of the city, you can see where Australia’s most famous beer is made, follow the journey of how it’s made and if that’s thirsty work, sample some afterwards.
  • Shopping in Paddington. If you want to buy something different and unique, try the boutique shops of Paddington for a relaxed retail experience.
  • Chinatown. Fortitude Valley is home to many of Brisbane’s Chinese community and the Chinatown of shops and restaurants. It’s an interesting cultural experience, especially if you get chatting to a ‘local’.
