How do I get to Adelaide?
With no direct flights you’ll have to enter Australia through Sydney or Perth, both accessible by direct flights from Johannesburg, and take a connecting flight. Both hubs are sufficiently interesting enough to warrant a stopover before continuing to Adelaide. From the airport take the Salisbury Highway until it joins the Princes Highway and follow this south to the city centre.

Getting Around Adelaide
A bit of a hotchpotch of roads, the A1 neatly bisects it north to southeast and there are many roads off this into the city centre. Everywhere is well signed and so you shouldn’t get lost, if you do, just head west until you reach the sea.

Out of Adelaide
Kangaroo Island, just offshore, is a great place to get away from the buzz of city life and indeed, see some kangaroos amongst plenty of other wildlife. Head too, out of the city to the Flinders Range which once marked the barrier between the civilised and the dangerous parts of South Australia.

Where to Stay in Adelaide

What can I see or do in Adelaide?

• Vineyards. The Barossa Valley amongst other vineyards is close by offering you a chance to see where your favourite vintage is produced and taste it only yards from the vine.
• Port Adelaide. This is the historic original part of Adelaide and well worth some of your time. Still a working port you can get boat trips, dolphin sight-seeing tours and fishing trips from the quayside.
• Adelaide Zoo. One for the kids and what a great zoo it is. One of the few in the world to have giant pandas, there’s loads to see and do in this zoo, set out in lush gardens.
• South Australia Maritime Museum. This is Australia’s oldest maritime museum and has an absorbing display of all things to do with the sea. Most interesting are the tales of shipwrecks in the cold waters offshore.
